June 2016

Well here we are, it’s nearly mid-summer, but isn’t it a bit chilly at the moment. Time flies when you’re busy and also when you’re not! Since my last blurb there have been a few meets, some of which we were unable to attend.

Our AGM at Awbridge was well attended, and there were some changes of officers at the committee meeting afterwards as well as a welcome to a new committee member, Alison (Eley). It’s good to have new people on the committee as well as from a younger age group than me. Mark has taken on the role of Secretary and I have taken on the role of Sites Officer with help from Geordie. The Mayday meet at Wildhern was, by all accounts, enjoyed by all with Maypole Dancing and the ‘Penny’ Fair. John brought a game that used to be played at Wessex, one that his father Richard (Wright) provided for enjoyment.

Unfortunately we were unable to get to that meet and the same for the next one at Alton Barnes. However we did visit the site on the Monday and said hello to those there. A thought was passed around as to whether people would like a site nearer to Chippenham for their folk festival but possibly without the use of a hall. Your thoughts please.

Our next meet, which will be reported on in the next newsletter, is at Furzebrook near Wareham. It is the same weekend as Wimborne Minster Folk Festival and that is not too far away. The rest of June holds the Folk Group AGM and the Folk Group holiday meet.

Sites after June are Awbridge again, but with the Beggars’ Fair in Romsey the same weekend. For those who have not yet been to Awbridge, it is a lovely site with the hall on the same site. There is a wood adjacent to the site which is well worth a walk around. We then have an invite from Midland Area to Shipston on Stour, and the end of July sees Wessex at Soberton Heath with camping at Scotts Haven.

Following this there is a preparation meet for the 2017 Easter Meet at De Montford school, Evesham. At the end of August Wessex are at St John’s Farm, Stuckton near Fordingbridge. It’s walking distance into the village where there area variety of shops, and the hall is also walking distance from the site.

Hope to see you at the meets, although we may be missing for some of the earlier ones.
